TexAnns falter offensively at St. Mary’s

SAN ANTONIO (November 22, 2016) – Tarleton women’s basketball was defeated on the road against St. Mary’s, 48-36, in a non-conference matchup at Bill Greehey Arena on Tuesday.

Mackenzie Hailey led Tarleton (1-4) in scoring with 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Tiara Tatum and Bailey Wipff each scored eight points. The TexAnns shot 28 percent in the game and was just 3-21 from 3-point range.

The TexAnns had their only lead of the night early in the first quarter on Baylee Peck‘s steal at midcourt that resulted in a fast break layup for a 4-1 lead. St. Mary’s closed the first quarter on a 12-2 run and led 13-6.

Tarleton got to within 13-11 in the second quarter when Tiara Tatum drained a 3-pointer from the right wing on an assist from Hailey. The Rattlers (5-1) went on another big run to close out a quarter, this time a 11-2 run to lead 27-15 at the half.

St. Mary’s built an 18-point lead in the third quarter but the TexAnns battled back by scoring the first nine points of the fourth to make it a 39-32 game with 6:46 to go. The Rattlers, however, went on a 5-0 stretch to build the lead back to double digits. Tarleton managed only four points in the final six minutes of play.

Travanti Downes gave the TexAnns a boost off the bench, scoring four points and grabbing six rebounds – five of them on the offensive end. Ikpeaku Iwobi had four points and seven rebounds. Baylee Peck led the TexAnns in assists with three.

Tarleton will have the next nine days off to get ready for Lone Star Conference play against Midwestern State on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m.
