STEPHENVILLE-Funeral services for Joe M. Smith, 85, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Erath County. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Joe was born in Bassett, Bowie County, to the late William Edward and Allie Gauntt Smith. He married the love of his life, Edwyna Hazlewood, on Nov. 24, 1951 in Clovis, New Mexico. Edwyna recently preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 2016.
Joe and Edwyna were the owners and operator of Smith Produce for over 30 years, earning him the nickname “Tater Joe.” He later worked as a truck driver for AMPI for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the Graham Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include his son, Tommy L. Smith and wife Johna of Stephenville; daughters, Etta Green and husband Leonard of Granbury, and Peggy Kallom of Granbury; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; brothers, Richard Dee Smith and wife Ethel of Alaska, and Alton Smith of Washington.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy D. Smith; and three grandchildren, Laura, Rowdy, and Tyler.
