Rodeo loses past president, bareback legend TJ Walter

STEPHENVILLE (January 4, 2016) — Thomas ‘TJ’ Walter, 67, a 12-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier as a bareback rider and past president of the PRCA, passed away on New Year’s Day following a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Walter made the NFR each year of the 1970s (1970-79) and again in 1981 and 1983. He was third in the world and third in the NFR average in 1977. He was fourth in the world standings in 1971 and was in the top five in the NFR average in 1974, 1977 and 1981, all according to an article published by prorodeo.com.

Walter served 10 years on the PRCA board of directors, was vice president of the PRCA for five years and was the bareback riding director on the contestant executive council. He was director of rodeo administration from 1987-2001.

A celebration of life is planned later this month in Fort Worth, but details are not yet finalized. He is survived by daughters Shawna Slaughter and Julie Carrillo and son Raymond Walter.
