STEPHENVILLE (January 13, 2017) — No. 4 Godley (24-4, 5-0) took sole possession of first-place in 8-4A Friday evening, hitting eight 3-pointers and playing its usual brand of suffocating defense to knock off No. 10 Stephenville (17-6, 4-1) in a district road contest, 46-32.
Mikaila Tyer hit five of Godley’s seven first-half 3-pointers and led everyone with 21 points offensively and constant tip-aways caused by her tenacity defensively on Coaches for the Cure Night at Gandy Gym.
The Lady Cats now hold a one-game lead and head’s up advantage over Stephenville at the midway point of the 8-4A race. Godley hosts the rematch between the top 10 district rivals, also perennial power’s regular season finale, on February 7.
Jaycee Pannell added 12 points for Godley while Stephenville was led by Payton Wall and Liz Pack with six points each.
Godley scored the last five points of the first quarter and first five of the second, a combined 10-0 run for a 19-9 lead, and the Lady Cats were in control the rest of the way.
The first 12 Godley points came from the 3-point arc, the fourth beginning the run and breaking a 9-9 tie. Pannell scored inside in the final seconds of the opening quarter for a 14-9 lead. Pannell also banked in the opening two points of the second quarter before Haley Robertson knocked down a 3 to stretch the Lady Cat advantage to 10.
Pack broke the Godley run by scoring in the paint for Stephenville, then she was fouled and knocked down both free throws to cut it to 19-13. But Godley hit two more 3-pointers and had seven by halftime when it was 25-15.
The Lady Cats later added an eighth 3 by, who else, Tyer. She buried one fro the top of the key to make it 38-29 right after Stephenville had made four free throws to pull within six halfway through the fourth.
The Bees had pulled within 33-24 on a Jordan Carter 3-pointer with 6:36 to play before a free throw by Pannell pushed the Godley lead back to 10. Wall and Jayci Morton each hit a pair of foul shots to cut it to 34-28, and its as 35-29 after each team split a pair of foul shots.
Following Tyer’s last 3 – arguably her biggest shot of the night – Godley was a perfect 6-6 from the stripe to pull away.
Morton finished with five – all in the fourth – for Stephenville, and Jordan Carter also had five. Madison Carter added four, Blair Landes three, Tesslie Baker two and Hailey Martin one.
Stephenville hosts Waxahachie Life in an 8-4A matchup at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
