GRANBURY (January 18, 2017) — Stephenville continued its youth movement Wednesday evening with a pair of goals both scored and assisted by freshmen in a 2-0 blanking of Granbury at Johnny Perkins Field.

A freshman also made two strong first half saves for the Honeybees as Madison Wyly earned the shutout in net with plenty of help from senior sweeper and Midwestern State commit Savannah Alford sweeping in front of her.

Ciara Johnston began the scoring in the 14th minute. Jimena Espinoza set it up with a nifty corner to the far post where Claire Choate centered the ball for Johnston to finish what officially stood as the match winner.

The Bees scored again before halftime off a sideline throw. The throw went off the chest of Jimenez who advanced the ball to Kalee Wright for a pass to Hayleigh Beam then to Gracie Bales who put it over the keeper’s head, off her outstretched hands and the post and into the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Stephenville remained in control throughout and had plenty of opportunities to add to the scoring on their side, but Granbury made a change at half and the second half keeper made four saves to prevent any further damage.

Next up for the Honeybees is the Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions at Stephenville Soccer Association Complex. They are in Pool A and face Waco Connally at 11:30 a.m. and Lorena at 2:30 p.m. Friday then Everman at 9 a.m. Saturday. The semifinals are 1 p.m. Saturday, followed at 2:30 p.m. by the consolation and championship matches.
