STEPHENVILLE (January 30, 2017) – Five hundred pounds of potatoes, 20 roasters and about a dozen volunteers are busy at work inside the Center Grove School House.
The Fourth Annual Oxford House “Soup to Go” Take-Out Supper serves up its signature potato soup, salad, seasoned crackers and dessert to a hungry crowd from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. tonight (Monday, January 30) at the Stephenville Historic House Museum.
Dianne Wilson, who heads up the fundraiser and the Oxford House Preservation Project, said Monday morning there was still a narrow window opportunity for diners who failed to purchase their tickets early. She said the limited number of remaining tickets scan be picked up from the museum grounds prior to the drive-thru event.
Funds raised from soup supper will benefit ongoing renovations to the Oxford House, and Wilson said almost every penny will be spent on the Phase IV of the project, which includes hardscaping – construction of parking areas, sidewalks, curbs and gutters – around the exterior of the Queen Anne style structure, as well as the assembly of planting beds and porch steps.
A $10 donation covers the meal, and with only 500 tickets being sold, the preservation committee hopes keep track with the 2016 meal and raise $5,000. Wilson said the goal is attainable since a number of community supporters pitch in and help keep costs at a minimum.
Wilson said Kerry Roach, owner of Jake & Dorothy’s Café, donates the 500 pounds of potatoes for the main dish; Milo Choate and CiCi’s Pizza donate 75 pounds of salad; Schreiber Foods donates the cheese; Dorothy Farrar, museum board treasurer, makes sure the committee has plenty of Allsup’s milk; and Belle Dowell, owner of Home Place at Ace, donated more than a dozen Nordic Ware Bundt brownie pans that make sure dessert looks – and tastes – its best.
“All we have to pay for is the take-out trays and ingredients for dessert,” Wilson said, adding the support of the community is appreciated.
As for the volunteers – museum board members and a few other individuals willing to give their time to preserve history and prepare potato soup, a sign hanging above the chopping table reminds them good things take time. It says, “Don’t Rush, Stay Calm, Breathe.”
Patrons will be routed from Washington St. onto Shapard St., which runs between the Oxford House and the Star Storage building, proceed through the back gate into the museum and around the north side of the Center Grove School, where drivers will be met in front of the school by ticket takers who will deliver their meals to the vehicle, so that soup purchasers need not exit their vehicles. After picking up soup orders, drivers will continue to the museum’s main entrance and exit onto Washington Street. People will be posted along that route to direct drivers into the back entrance of the museum.
