STEPHENVILLE (February 6, 2017) – On Sunday afternoon the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 240 and the Patriotic Committee of the Stephenville High School Student Council conducted the annual Four Chaplains Memorial Program.  The public was invited to attend.

The program told of the heroism of four chaplains of different faiths onboard the ill-fated U.S.A.T. Dorchester, which was sank by a German U-boat on Feb. 3, 1943.  As the true story goes, these four chaplains gave up their own lives and their own life jackets to save others.  Of the 902 men aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, 672 died, leaving 230 survivors.

These four chaplains were true heroes.  The story was told by Julie Littlefield and Francine Pratt.  Then, the Patriotic Committee went on to share a biography on each individual chaplain and to light a candle in their memory.  The crowd sang Amazing Grace, followed by TAPS and a closing prayer.
