STEPHENVILLE (February 26, 2017) – City and school officials are warning motorists of altered travel routes around Hook Elementary. Beginning Monday morning, certain city streets will be closed or have parking restrictions in place for a period of about three weeks.
The disruption is due to road and sewer crews that continue to work on the TSU Methodist Branch Sewer Relief Project.
Stephenville ISD sent notification home for parents and caregivers of the district’s third and fourth grade students, while city officials are sharing information in an effort to cut down on confusion and frustration.
Public Works Director Nick Williams said a plan is in place to facilitate school buses and other motorists picking up and dropping off students. He said a portion of Ollie Street will be the first to be closed to facilitate the infrastructure improvements.
“As the construction progresses, that area will be reopened and we will continue by closing one block at a time,” Williams said.
Beginning Monday, Ollie Street will be closed from Sloan Street to Vanderbilt Street and from Vanderbilt to Jones.
Meanwhile, four-way stop signs will be in place at Ollie and Shirley and Neblett and Shirley to allow school buses to safely travel in the area.
“The temporary stop signs will provide an alternate route for school bus traffic,” Stephenville Police Chief King said. “Temporary parking restrictions will also help ease the congestion.”
Parking restrictions will be in effect in the 200 block of Baxter and 800 block of Neblett, where parking will be prohibited on the west side of the streets.
Parking will also be prohibited on both sides of the street in the 1100 block of West Shirley.
“Parents of third grade students will need to approach from Frey Street to Jones for drop-off and pick-up,” King added. “When parents exit Jones from Hook, they will need to make a right turn and return to Frey Street.”
Jones and Ollie will be closed over Stephenville’s ISDs Spring Break holiday, March 13-17.
The TSU Methodist Branch Sewer Relief Project started in September, according to Williams, who said the entire project is running slightly ahead of schedule. He anticipates the project will be completed in April.
