STEPHENVILLE (February 27, 2017) – SPARD (Stephenville Parks and Recreation Department) is geared up for America’s favorite pastime and calling on boys and girls across the area to take part in the city’s youth baseball and softball.

Hawk Scott, SPARD superintendent, said ongoing registration for 10U and 12U ends Friday and sign-up for tee ball, coach pitch, machine pitch and 15U ends March 17.

Scott also said Stephenville’s program is open to players across Erath County, as well as youth in towns of Comanche, Proctor, Sidney, Desdemona, Lipan, Hico and surrounding communities.

“It’s a new league and new attitude,” Scott said.

SPARD has partnered with the renowned Little League Baseball and Softball, and the upcoming season will be with the new league for ages 4 through 12. Older players, ages 13 through 15, will follow in the 2018 season.

According to the organization’s website, since its founding in 1939 by Carl Stotz, Little League has instilled leadership, character, courage and loyalty in all that participate, including the nearly 1.5 million adult volunteers. Little League can be found in more than 80 countries worldwide with more than 2.4 million children participating each year.

The Little League World Series and a growing number of regional games are broadcasted on ESPN.

“We are very excited about this move for our youth as we build their skills to become better athletes and role models for our community,” Scott said.

Older teenagers and adults are also encouraged to get involved with the program.

“We are always looking for coaches and umpires,” Scott said.

Applications are available online or can be obtained at the SPARD office. Paperwork and registration fees should be taken to SPARD at 378 West Long Street in Stephenville prior to the registration deadline. Call at 254-918-1295 for more information.

Meanwhile, Scott said parents, players and other SPARD supporters can stay in tune with ongoing and future activities by signing up for text alerts.
