ERATH COUNTY (March 11, 2017) – A man has been taken into custody in relation to the shooting in Erath County Friday morning. Bruce Vannoy, 42 has been arraigned in Grayson County on charges of Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon, with a bond of $500,000. He will be returned to Erath County next week.
According to Erath County Chief Investigator Heath Crossland, at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Texas Rangers served a warrant in Grayson County in reference to the shooting. Chief Crossland said Vannoy is believed to live in Grayson County, but has several “ties to the Erath County area.”
“The investigation lead to a residence in Collinsville where Texas Rangers assisted in locating a vehicle thought to be seen at the offense location.” Crossland reported. “Additional information lead to a warrant being drawn up for an individual and that individual being arrested by the Texas Rangers.”
Crossland said two Erath County investigators went to Sherman to interview the suspect. And after the interview, it was determined the suspect would be brought back to Erath County in the next few days.
According to Erath County report at approximately 7:23 a.m. on Friday, a 36-year-old man was shot in the neck near the intersection of County Road 539 and FM 2481 in Erath County. Crossland said the victim was seated in the driver’s seat with the window down when he was shot.
After being shot, the victim drove to a house on 539 where a female at the residence loaded him into another vehicle and started towards Stephenville to the hospital. Sheriff’s deputies intercepted the vehicle at FM 2481 and US 67. The victim was first taken to TexasHealth Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenville and then airlifted to a Waco hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and is still in ICU at this time. Reports indicate he will undergo at least one more surgery.
Crossland did say investigators know the suspect is known to both the victim and the witness, who are working with officers. He also said the Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Stephenville PD, Texas DPS, Collinsville PD, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, Hico Marshal’s Office and Grayson County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
“We worked until late in the night last night to get this suspect in custody safely,” Crossland said. “And I just really want to thank all the hard work from the many departments in this case. It was just really neat to be a part of something like that and we, here in Erath County, really do appreciate all the hard work from other folks involved.”
