STEPHENVILLE (March 15, 2017) – Romond Jenkins can now add 2017 NCAA All-Star to his resume.
Jenkins has been selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches to participate in the 2017 Reese’s NCAA Division II All-Star Game in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The game will be played on Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. CT during the NCAA Division II Elite Eight on the day between the semifinals and championship games at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. The game will also be live-streamed on Facebook Live on the Sanford Pentagon Facebook page.
The 2017 Reese’s® Division II College All-Star Game will have two teams of 10 senior student-athletes. Two student-athletes are selected from each of the eight regions in NCAA Division II with the four remaining selections made at-large. The coaches for the game are former Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Mankato State head coach Butch Raymond and former Augustana head coach Bill Gross.
Jenkins becomes the third player in Tarleton men’s basketball history to play in the NABC All-Star game, joining Avery Patterson (2008) and Chuck Guy (2014).
“We are very excited for Romond to earn this opportunity to not only represent himself, but he also gets the chance to represent Tarleton State University,” said head coach Lonn Reisman. “Romond had a tremendous year and he is very deserving of this invite. We look forward to seeing him compete against some of the best players in the country next week.”
Jenkins, a D2CCA first-team all-region selection and the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year, helped lead Tarleton to a 22-8 record and reach the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight season. Jenkins, who was also a first-team All-LSC selection, has been one of the best rebounders in the nation this season. Jenkins was the only player in the Lone Star Conference to average a double-double with 13.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Jenkins ranked fifth in the nation with 18 double-doubles. Jenkins was second in the LSC in rebounding, 11th in the league in scoring, first in field goal percentage (63.1), first in blocked shots (2.0) and 10th in steals (1.4).
Jenkins was top 12 in the nation in several categories: eighth in total rebounds (324), eighth in rebounds per game (11.2), eighth in offensive rebounds per game (3.97) and 11th in field goal percentage (63.4). Jenkins established career highs this season in points (26), rebounds (17, three times), steals (6, two times), and blocks (6, two times). Jenkins had double digit rebounds in 21 of the 30 games. Jenkins was a four-time Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the most in the LSC.
