(May 27, 2017) — Stephenville would have had no problem advancing from pool play to a state tournament qualifying game in Brock Saturday, except the Yellow Jackets didn’t need to.

Instead, the 7-on-7 version of Jacket football stopped after outscoring its opponents 132-33 in three pool play matches at Brock. Stephenville has already secured its spot in the Adidas Texas 7v7 Championships, thus the Yellow Jackets can not advance past pool play in any remaining qualifier tournaments. They are now 7-0 in qualifier tournament contests this 7-on-7 season, having won all four contests in the Gatesville SQT a week ago before beating host Brock 33-20, Benbrook 59-0 and Breckenridge 40-13 on Saturday.

The Stephenville defense has played four consecutive SQT games without allowing more than 20 points, and the defenders are actually scoring some themselves. Blu Caylor returned an interception for a Jacket TD Saturday, when Cole Pettit and Zane Walker also had interceptions. The Jackets are surrendering just 17.1 points per games – a miniscule number by 7-on-7 standards – in SQT contests.

Easton Jones tossed five TDs against Brock, in easily the toughest of the three matches, and even with Brock pulling within one possession on two occasions in the second half, Stephenville played the bulk of the way with a two-score cushion. Jones rested against Benbrook and returns to throw four first-half TDs against Breckenridge.

Backup quarterback Tyler Schouten was also strong for Stephenville, passing for eight TDs against Benbrook and two in the second half against Breckenridge. Blake Aragon was the favorite target for Jones and Schouten Saturday, as junior receiver scored multiple touchdowns in all three games. He has five multi-touchdown performances in seven SQT contests.

Stephenville is idle until league play on Tuesday, June 6, at Glen Rose.
