DUBLIN (June 3, 2017) — A peaceful, rainy Saturday morning in downtown Dublin turned intense when a fire, reportedly caused by a lightning strike, broke out between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m. in the attic of a building on Patrick Street, also known as Business 377/67.

Dublin Volunteer Fire Department was immediately paged to a building reportedly owned by Dublin resident Keith Nichols along the west side of Patrick Street between its intersections with Blackjack (State Highway 6) and Elm streets, just around the corner from landmarks such as Dublin City Hall and Dublin Bottling Works. Dublin Police Department quickly closed Patrick Street to traffic in the immediate vicinity, but allowed a host of onlookers a front row view from the sidewalk directly across the street.

Erath County Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Harbin VFD, Proctor VFD and even Stephenville FD were soon dispatched to join Dublin firefighters on scene, where at 11:59 a.m. Flash reporter/photographer Russell Huffman said an apparent lightning strike had blasted plaster from the building into the street.

Huffman reported the fire to be contained at that time, and said firefighters quickly peeled back a roof comprised of wood covered with metal to extinguish the remaining flames. Most units were clear of the scene by 12:35 p.m.

Flash reporters Russell Huffman, Jessie Horton and Brad Keith contributed to this report.
