STEPHENVILLE (July 15, 2017) — A state champion of sorts will be crowned today in Stephenville City Park, where nine teams including Stephenville are competing in the Texas Teenage Softball High School Eligible state tournament.
Stephenville was among the winners in the opening round of bracket action Friday evening, building a 7-0 lead then holding off a late charge by Bosqueville in a 7-5 victory. Julia Flores, who was not with the team in pool games earlier in the day, earned the win in the circle just four days after playing first base and pitching in the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Classic in Austin.
The Honeybees return to action at 10:30 a.m. on the Saint Gobain Field against Clyde, which beat them 5-1 earlier in the day in pool play. Flores was absent from that and a 4-3 pool win over Rusk because she was competing with her select team. Jessica Howell belted a 3-run home run to power the Bees in that win, which hit the time limit and stopped after just three innings. All seven runs were scored in the first.
Pool play was used only to guarantee each team four games in the tournament,Stephenville has played in it each of the three years that Stephenville City Park has served as the host. Stephenville, Clyde, Bosqueville and Rusk are joined in the tournament by
Select teams aren’t welcome in the HSE division of the Texas Teenage Baseball-Softball Association, as it provides school teams the opportunity to play together during the summer months. School summer squads are often shorthanded, if they compete at all, due to top players being accumulated on select teams, many of which face busy summer schedules. Stephenville High School has had its summer squad in the tournament each of three years the city has hosted the event at Stephenville City Park.
