(August 12, 2017) — Stephenville won its final two games in Round Rock Westwood’s 2017 Showcase Thournament, finishing as consolation champs in the silver bracket.

The Honeybees beat 5A Cedar Park Vista Ridge 25-18, 25-20 in the silver consolation match, reaching that point by knocking off Lorena, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18. They were relegated to the consolation side of the bracket because Liberty Hill defeated them 25-16, 25-22 to begin the day. Stephenville, Lorena and Liberty HIll, all in Conference 4A, were among the smallest schools in an event predominantly featuring 5A and 6A teams.

Such is the norm for clubs coached by Fran Metzger. She has taken her Stephenville teams to many big-school tournaments through the years, and it seems every season, come district time, she’s reminded it’s the right decision when she sees how far her team has come by being pitted against such competition.

The Bees (6-4) were 5-4 in the tournament after winning their season opener at home earlier in the week. They host Abilene Cooper at about 6:30 p.m.Friday, possibly a few minutes later depending on the length of a 5:30 p.m. junior varsity match, both at Gandy Gym.

Jayci Morton had seven kills from the middle and Chloe Goodman added six from the outside against Liberty Hill, while Hailey Martin tallied nine digs and Gabbie Lucero added seven to go with five assists. Hannah Huckabee recorded five assists.

Morton and Salette Rios were each especially active in the longer consolation semifinal. Morton tallied 10 kills and three blocks while Rios killed nine balls. Huckabee had 12 assists and Lucero seven. Martin dug 15 balls and Maren Isham added 13.

Ashton Garner killed seven balls and didn’t commit an error on 16 attacks, hitting .440 against Vista Ridge. Rios added six kills, Lucero and Huckabee each collected eight assists, Martin had 10 digs and Lucero seven and Goodman soared for three blocks and three kills. Kristen Pettit is a defensive specialist by trade but went on the offensive, using her jump serve to fire three aces.
