(November 14, 2017) — Stephenville survived its first real test of the girls basketball season Tuesday, overcoming a one-point deficit by outscoring Granbury 17-7 over the final 5:30 to beat the 5A Lady Pirates 56-47 at James Waan Sports Complex.

Stephenville outscored Granbury 19-12 in the final stanza, highlighted by an 8-2 Honeybee run over a stretch of just more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. They trailed 40-39 with 5:33 remaining then streaked in front 47-42 with just under three minutes left.

Once Stephenville pushed the lead to seven with less than a minute to go, Granbury was out of options and had to foul to stop the clock. Everything was going the Bees’ way in the fourth, including going 7-9 from the stripe after a paltry 6-15 over the first three quarters.

Six different Honeybees accounted for the fourth-quarter scoring, led by Hailey Martin, Jayci Morton and Tesslie Baker with four points each. That gave Martin a team-leading 15, Baker 11 and Morton 8. Payton Wall also scored 8, Jordan Carter 7, Madison Carter 6 and Hannah Bernays 2.

Stephenville gave Granbury an assist in the third by subbing in a player not entered in the official book. The technical foul free throws by Mandy Withey and a layup by Kenzie Scott brought the Lady Pirates even at 35-35 before a Stephenville basket with just five seconds remaining provided the Bees a narrow lead entering the fourth.

Stephenville led 13-11 after one and 27-21 at the half. Withey led all scorers with 20 points for Granbury, nine before intermission and 11 after.

Head coach Alan Thorpe likes a practice-heavy schedule without many games the opening two weeks and has set that up once more. The Bees went a week between their 50-point win over Millsap to begin the season and the trip to Granbury, and now it’s six days before they play back-to-back contests less than 24 hour apart leading into a break for Thanksgiving.

Stephenville is visiting Eastland next Monday with the varsity expected to tip off about 6:30 p.m. Jacksboro visits Gandy Gym for a Tuesday matinee beginning at 12:30 P.M.
