Open Forum planned to discuss possible move to Division I Athletics

STEPHENVILLE (November 15, 2017) — A university-wide Open Forum has been set for Wednesday, Nov. 29 to explore the possibility of moving to NCAA Division I Athletics.

The session will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 206 of the E.J. Howell Education Building.

The open forum is sponsored by the University Task Force: Athletics, Exploration of Issues Related to Potential Transition from DII to DI, which was recently appointed by President F. Dominic Dottavio to gather information about the impact of such a move on the entire university.

Tarleton may receive an invitation to move to a Division I conference in the near future. The task force has been charged with providing an objective, unbiased assessment that can help the university reach the most informed decision about what is best for Tarleton.

If Tarleton is invited to join a Division I conference, the decision will rest with Dr. Dottavio, in consultation with the Executive Cabinet.

An outside consultant, that in 2014 provided an analysis of a potential move from Division II to Division I athletics, has been asked to update that report to reflect any changes that have occurred in the past three years.

Athletic Director Lonn Reisman also is updating a transition plan that would provide the guidelines if the choice is to accept an invitation to go Division I.

Task force members are: Chair Dr. Rick Richardson, Interim Vice President for Finance and Administration; Dr. Keith Emmert, Faculty Senate President; Dr. Keldon Bauer, Head, Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics; Dominic Procaccino, Vice President of Student Government Association; Justin Boyd, Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance; and Lori Beaty, Assistant Vice President and Controller.

The task force is actively seeking questions about the possible move from university faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends.
