(November 16, 2017) — Head coach David Yeager could not have planned for any more smooth of an opening week to the UIL state football playoffs.

His De Leon Bearcats (11-0) built a 49-0 lead before cooling the Jets in a 62-14 victory over Italy (5-6) Pirate Stadium and Johnny Perkins Field Thursday evening, so now they have Friday to watch Celeste and Alvord fight for the right to play them in next week’s area round.

The head coach was able to watch his son, Kevin Yeager, launch our touchdown passes including three to Calvin Martin. The smooth mechanic of a passer is up to 36 TD passes with just two interceptions this season, and with five regular-season rushing TDs, is now responsible for 41 total scores.

Senior running back Anthony Rangel had 1,723 yards entering the playoffs and moves on to the area round on the precipice of the 2,000-yard plateau and with 25 rushing touchdowns after two more in the blowout win. He could have had four but was stopped at the two on a 60-yard run and fumbled one across the goal line that still resulted in a Bearcat TD thanks to a quick recovery by offensive lineman Kyler Shafer.

Orson Sylva caught the lone TD pass that didn’t go to Martin and Chris Cox carried the Bearcats across the goal line after the long run by Rangel, who opened the game with two long runs for a TD and not long later scored on a 71-yard burst.

The defense even got in on the scoring, as James Hancock intercepted a pass by taking it right as it left the hand of the Italy quarterback and strolling into the end zone from just two yards out for the final score.

De Leon is 11-0 for the first time since the 1990 Bearcats made it all the way to the 2A state final. They enjoyed a 10-0 regular season in 2008 but lost in the bi-district round.

This Bearcat team wants to be more like the former and still has a shot now that it has survived longer than the latter.

All that before tge clock struck 12 turning Thursdag into Friday. Nice planning by a coach and execution by a team working together to make history in De Leon.
