(November 21, 2017) — Stephenville shot the lights out in its first two boys games of the new basketball season, but their greatest strength in those wins was their most glaring weakness in their first loss Monday.
The Yellow Jackets shot a paltry 26 percent including just 14 percent from beyond the arc while being defeated 63-42. Graham built a 30-17 lead by the half, and had the win basically on ice after extending the margin to 18 by the end of the third.
The Yellow Jackets are back inside the friendly confines of Gandy Gym at 2 p.m. today for an early Thanksgiving visit from 6A Abilene High. They will follow the Honeybees, who face Jacksboro at about 12:30 p.m.
Graham didn’t exactly light it up, but the Steers still managed to shoot significantly better than the Yellow Jackets. They were 38 percent on eight more attempts than Stephenville and hit 26 percent of their 3-point tries.
The Steers benefited from five less turnovers and seven more assists than the Jackets, who couldn’t take advantage of a stat-stuffing effort by Mason Holstein including 14 points, six rebounds and five steals. Skylar Stilwell collected 12 points and five boards.
Calvin Darby netted five points for Stephenville and Mason Castleberry concluded the scoring with four.
