ALVARADO — (November 24, 2017) – Kevin Yeager is human, it turns out.

But he and backfield mate Anthony Rangel of undefeated De Leon are still bertter than most of us.

In high school football circles, at least, they are elite. They proved it again Friday, when Yeager overcame an early interception with five touchdown passes and Rangel rushing for 136 and one touchdown while taking a short reception 80 yards for another score in 46-15 rout of Celeste at Charles Head Stadium.

Yeager, a junior and third-year starter, came out of the affair passing for 38 TDs and three interceptions this season. Rangel, meanwhile, joined a particularly select group of rushers with more than 2,000 yards.

2A and De Leon No. 6 as they prepare to meet in Whitney next Friday, beginning at 7:30-p.m.

The big numbers came predominantly before halftime when the Bearcats amassed a 34-7 lead. Outside the interception to begin the game, the Bearcats were stopped only when they lost a fumble. The remaining five drives all ended in touchdowns.

Chris Cox made the final play :De Leon needed to silence any who thought a good one-loss Celeste team mah have a rally coming Cox returned the second-half kickoff 84 yards, setting up a one-play scoring drive.

Just like that, it was 40-7 and the Bearcats hit the brakes while ensuring they are fresh and healthy for the big game against Mart.

The Bearcats have three shutouts this season and have won every game by at least 13 points, most by many more than that as they are outscoring the opposition by an average margin of 47.9 – 9.

Not to be outdone and even with a loss to begin the season, Mart has five shutouts and has beaten its opponents 60.2 – 9.9.

So who played a tougher schedule, many will ask. Even that is hard to see as being much different. Mart tough 3A competition early before dominating a district full of cupcakes. The only loss between them belongs to Mart, which was edged 40-38 in overtime by 3A Lexington to begin the season. The Panthers defeated 3A McGregor 43-22 and 3A Center 57-21.

De Leon enjoyed a relatively easy pre-district slate but also rolled in over 2016 state finalist Crawford and two strong programs in Hico and Goldthwaite, beating those three by the combined score of 116-35.

Their lone common opponent is Goldthwaite- which De Leon defeated 51-7 in final week of the regular season, seven days before Mart eliminated them in a 62-3 bi-district blowout.

Something has to give Friday, and of course, something eventually will. One thing’s clear –  the winner of this round of 16 dream matchup is no doubt a state championship contender.
