Bostad leads TexAnns to third straight win

Junior guard scores 16, Tatum nets seven during decisive run

STEPHENVILLE (December 30, 2017) — Tarleton State opened the fourth quareter with a 14-2 run to pull away for its third straight victory Saturday at Wisdom Gym.

Tiara Tatum scored seven of her nine points during during the decisive run, which padded the lead to 19 in a 60-49 TexAnn win against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

McKinley Bostad hit two free throws to end a big third-quarter run by SOSU, which trailed 31-13 late in the second quarter, but pulled within 35-32 late in the third.

Baylee Peck hit a jumper before two SOSU free throws, then knocked down two of her own from the foul stripe, where Tarleton was 20-24 and outscored the Savage Storm by 11.

It was 41-34 entering the fourth, and Tatum dominated the next five minutes with a 3-pointer, a two-point jumper and two free throws. Bostad hit four more free throws during the run, which also included a foul shot by freshman Lucy Benson.

By the time Collins put a jumper through it was 55-36, making the final five minutes and change a mere formality. Bostad was 8-8 from the stripe and led all scorers with 16. The former Kennedale star and Texas Girls coaches Association Conferences 1A-3A Female Athlete of the Year also collected five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.

Tarleton needed the Bostad performance in their first game after Christmas and last on the 2017 calendaer.

Lone Star Conference Preseason Player of the Year Mackenzie Hailey and Division I transfer Katie Webster combined for only six points on 1-13 shooting. Hailey was 1-8 from the floor and had only four baords.

Foul trouble was the primary obstacle for the sophomore post from Burleson, playing only 15 minutes brefore fouling out in the midst of the decisive run with more than seven minutes reamining.

Tarleton shot just 29 percent including 32 percent from the arc. Going 83.3 percent from the foul stripe was crucial to the win, as were 26 points off 25 Southeastern Oklahoma turnovers.

Southeastern shot just 32 percent overal and in the second half hit only one of nine 3-point tries. Emem David scored 12 points and collected 14 rebounds while Ariannah Kemp and Katie Branam added 10 points each. Guards Courtney Brady and Aliz Robinson committed six turnovers apiece.

Tarleton led for 34 minutes and change after a Bostad 3-pointer made it 10-8. That began a stretch of 12 straight points by the TexAnns to make it 19-8 after the first. Following the go-ahead shot was a jumper by Roberts, five straight points by Trejouir Wilson and a jumper by Nina Alvarez.

Peck hit 3 to make it 15 straight befor an SOSU free throw. The Savage Storm went from the 7:39 mark of the first until 5:09 remained in the second between field goals, a stretch of 12 minutes, 10 seconds.

SOSU did begin to show signs of life after falling behind 31-13. Kemp hit a jumper before three players combined on four free throws to trim the deficit to 31-19 by halftime, and Kemp added four more as the Savage Storm poured in 14 of the first 17 after intermission.

But Bostad started getting to the line, with six of her free throws coming in the fourth and final 2:15 of the third, igniting the run that ultimately sent Tarleton to victory.
