STEPHENVILLE (February 13, 2018) — Rest assured it is still February, even if the first five minutes of the fourth quarter felt like the fourth of July after the firework show put on by Tarleton State in that stretch.

The TexAnns outscored second-place Texas A&M-Commerce 19-4 during those crucial five minutes, nine of those points by McKinley Bostad and six on a pair of 3-pointers by Tiara Tatum. Tarleton was clinging to a 45-42 edge to begin the fourth, bud by as many as 18 in the 68-53 victory.

Tarleton made it s first seven shot attempts in the fourth and finished 9-12 from the floor in the final 10 minutes, lifting its field goal percentage to 50 percent for the game. After entering the fourth with six points each, Bostad and Tatum finished with 15 and 12, respectively. Katie Webster poured in 14 of her 16 over the initial three quarters.

The TexAnns inched within a game of A&M-Commerce near the top of the Lone Star Conference. The Lions entered the contest tied for second alongside West Texas A&M, both just a game back of first-place Angelo State.

Taleton entered the contest tied with Eastern New Mexico for fourth place. The TexAnns are home for the rest of the regular season – three games – before turning their attention to the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament in Frisco. They will be trying to defend their 2017 tournament title. That was the last of six straight conference tournaments at Allen Event Center.

Tight defense by both clubs caused havoc in the form of 4 total turnovers, 29 by Tarleton and 25 by A&M-Kingsville.  But the TexAnns scored 20 points off their takeaways to 13 by the Lions. A&M-Commerce shot 39.9 percent and had just one double-digit scorer in Artaejah Gay with 14 points and eight boards.

Gay produced the near double-double performance despite struggling to maneuver up and down the court on a heavily braced left knee that limited her to just 24 minutes. Standout Lion guard Princess Davis was limited to nine points on just 3-9 shooting.

A&M-Commerce was especially poor from the arc. The Lions made their first and last 3-point tries and missed 14 straight attempts in between to hit just 12.5 percent. Tarleton dominated the rebounding battle 39-27.

LSC Preseason player of the year and double-double machine Mackenzie Hailey struggled inside against the size of Gay and the athleticism Melanie Ransom and Jocelyn Pierce, failing to score a point until a free throw late in the third. But Hailey was also better in the fourth, scoring four points to post a final stat line of five points, 11 boards, six assists and six blocked shots.

The first half saw a 180 degree turn by each team from first quarter to second. The Lions led 6-2 before faltering the rest of the first quarter with 11 turnovers that were turned into 16 Tarleton points. The TexAnns then gave the ball away 11 times in the second quarter, allowing A&M-Commerce to trim a 24-12 deficit to 30-26 by halftime. the TexAnns were just 2-11 in the field in the second quarter, its lowest-scoring single this season.

Tarleton is off Thursday and hosts Texas Woman’s at 2 p.m. Saturday.
