(March 6, 2018) — It’s a good time to be Blake Aragon.

These days the 6-5 senior (6-7 if his hair is done right) is planning his future as a Texas State wide receiver, counting days to his high school graduation and trying to master the best approach and techniques in the long jump competition.

Oh, and then there’s the high jump. No one in Conference 4A in 2017 could jump with Aragon, who posted the top height in conference by clearing 6-10 at the District 8-4A meet in Midlothian, then won state gold by clearing 6-7 at the UIL Track & Field State Meet in Austin.

No one was surprised to see Aragon come in first at the Bluebonnet Relays in high jump last weekend, but some may have done a double take when reading his name at the top of the final standings in the long jump. Argaon high jumped 6-6, long jumped 21-9.25 and won gold in both to get his senior campaign off to a strong start. Furthermore, he led Yellow Jacket jumpers to a level they have not reached in recent years.

With Kyle Lindsey taking second, Stephenville scored 18 points in high jump. Krece Nowak was fourth to give the Jackets 14 total points in the long jump, and the junior also took fourth in triple jump. Add the bronze and six points earned by 11-foot pole vaulter Quade Cowand, and that’s 42 points in four field events.

The only problem for Stephenville scoring 43 in the field is there were only 22 more to come on the track. The 65 points collecdted by the Yellow Jackets translated to a fourth-place finish, just four behind third-place Jim Ned. Forth Worth South Hills out-battled Brownwood down the stretch to win with 150 points to 134.

Stephenville did have a few bright spots on the track, just not enough of them.  Nowak was third in the 100 and part of a third-place group effort in the 4×100.   The 4×400 grouping of Lindsey, Nowak Parker and Cole Pettit finished sixth. The Jackets did not score in the 4×200.
