(March 5, 2018) — Hailey Martin has accepted her next job even before she finished updating her resume.

The versatile Stephenville High School senior already has a signed national letter of intent filed safely away somewhere at Tarleton State University and the NCAA.

But before trading Honeybee blue and gold for TexAnn purple and white, Martin set out Friday to write a fitting final chapter to an already storied high school athletic career. She’s a three-sport star at SHS, and that doesn’t include her cheerleading. During track and field, though, it’s as if she’s a three-sport star all at once.

A jumper, hurdler and sprinter, Martin picked up where she left off last season, winning the triple jump and leading the Bees in scoring at the season-opening Bluebonnet Relays at Gordon wood Stadium in Brownwood. She was also third in long jump, giving her 16 points in the field, and added five points as part of the third-place girls 4×100-meter relay and fifth-place 4×200 meter relay and sixth individually in the 100 meter hurdles.

While the experience of Martin provides leadership for the Bees, the endurance of Presley Wall adds scoring. The freshman distance runner has already made a name for herself in varsity cross country and now has a win in her high school debut in the 3,200 meter run. The younger of two Wall sisters in the varsity lineup, Presley also placed second in the 1,600 to score 18 total points.

Stephenville won a third event with Jordan Carter going over 5 feet, 4 inches in high jump. Alee Decker was two spots back in third, giving them 16 points in that event. Martin and fifth-placed Shayden Toof combined for 12 in triple jump, matching the 4×100 relay as the Bees’ second-highest scoring event.

Stephenville scored 106 total points, finishing behind only Brownwood with 172. Graham Scored 87 and Midland Christian 81 to round out the top four in the 12-team competition.

The meet was the first for Jeremiah Butchee as head coach of SHS girls track. He replaced legendary Mike Copeland, who remains athletic director for SISD.
