(March 16, 2018) — Stephenville scored three early runs, but three Yellow Jacket errors helped Midlothian Heritage out of the early hole by the the second inning then on to a  6-4 win over the Yellow Jackets in a District 8-4A baseball matinee Friday.

Singles by Gage Graham, Gabe Moore and Trevor Easter gave Stephenville an early lead and a 2-run double by Derek Gifford made it 3-0 after the top of the first.

But for Stephenville that was it until the seventh when Anthony Whenert pinch hit for a single and let Nolan Carroll return to the game to run in his stead. Carroll took second on a single by Graham and third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Cade Dunavent before scoring the final run on a sacrifice fly by Cody Moore.

It was too little, too late.

Heritage singled and then was helped along by an error and a walk in the top of the first. A fielder’s choice grounder brought in the first Jaguar run and more would come in the second, when they took the led for good.

Heritage picher Trey Bostie double and following a pair of walks Caison Clower tied the game with a 2-run single.

Moore brought in the go-ahead run with a single left, and Heritage added single runs in the fourth and fifth.

Graham and Easter each had two hits for Stephenville which had eight base knocks to seven by Heritage, but the Jaguars also drew seven walks from Yellow Jacket pitchers Mason Castleberry and Caleb Smith.

Castleberry walked four and allowed four hits while striking out three over two innings. There was an unearned run among the four total runs he surrendered, and both runs on Smith were unearned. Smith walked three and allowed three hits. He struck out two in four innings of work.

Stephenville had to earn everything against Bostie, who went 5.2 innings, yielding three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven.

The Jaguars played error-free defense behind Bostie and Bryce Fuller, who came in for final four outs, getting out of a bases loaded two-out situation with a strikeout to end the top of the sixth. He struck out another batter in the of the seventh.

Fuller also walked two and an RBI base knock by Easter made for a little drama, but not enough for the Yellow Jackets, who stranded nine runners. The Jaguars stranded six.

Stephenville has another 8-4A challenge on Tuesday. Alvarado visits James T. Young Baseball Field at 7 p.m.
