STEPHENVILLE (March 28, 2018) — Eleven Tarleton State University musicians recently performed as members of the select 2018 College Band Directors National Association’s (CBDNA) Southwest Region Intercollegiate Band.

The distinguished ensemble was composed of university and college music students from Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and were hosted last week by the University of Houston. The CBDNA Intercollegiate Band convenes every two years.

Tarleton students selected for the CBDNA region intercollegiate band are Ricardo Allen II, Derik Daubenspeck, Darshan Jhaveri, John Miske, Akira Okamoto, Olivia Perkins, Grant Shane, Johnathen Standifer, Kailey Swaim, Austen Whaley and Chad Wiley.

Students were nominated by interim Tarleton Band Director Dr. Gary Westbrook, associate professor of music, to apply and audition for the Southwest Region Intercollegiate Band.

Austen Whaley successfully auditioned into first chair for alto saxophone. Other students placed highly in their sections as well: Kailey Swaim, Ricardo Allen II and Akira Okamoto, all second chair; and Chad Wiley, third chair

This marked Darshan Jhaveri’s second CBDNA Intercollegiate Band selection this school year. He performed with the Tau Beta Sigma National Intercollegiate band this past summer.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our student musicians,” Westbrook said. “Working next to their peers from schools such as the University of Texas, Sam Houston, the University of Houston and others, each of our Tarleton musicians brought their strong musicianship to every rehearsal, taking full advantage of this unique opportunity to make music.”

The CBDNA Southwest Region Intercollegiate Band was conducted by Dr. Frank Ticheli and performed a public concert on Saturday, March 24, at the University of Houston’s Moore’s Opera House. Selections performed by the ensemble included Ticheli’s AcadianaAmerican Elegy, Angels in the Architecture, and Percy Grainger’s Children’s March.
