STEPHENVILLE – The newest member of the Tarleton football coaching staff has plenty of knowledge of the Lone Star Conference as Todd Whitten has announced the addition of Adam Clark.

Clark comes to Tarleton after spending the last eight years as the head coach of Western New Mexico, including the last two within the Lone Star Conference. He joins the Texans as the Assistant Head Coach with defensive line responsibilities and the Special Teams Coordinator.

“Coach Clark did a really good job during his time at Western New Mexico,” said Whitten. “His teams always played hard and you could tell they were very well-coached. When we were playing against his teams, we always had a great deal of respect for him and his teams. I’m glad to have him here.”

Clark stepped down as the head coach at Western New Mexico last November after finishing the 2017 by winning four of his last six games, including back-to-back wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M to close out the season.

“I’m excited to be here,” said Clark. “Tarleton is a place that cares about trying to be successful and achieve excellence. I wanted to be a part of an environment that puts everyone in a position to succeed. The support and resources are in place here for this program to have success.

“Tarleton has some really talented players and we’ve just got to get them coached up to play together,” he continued. “We have a great opportunity here to be successful.”

In his time at Western New Mexico, Clark racked up 33 wins to rank him No. 3 all-time in program history for wins by a head coach. He coached 42 all-conference student-athletes at Western, including QB Mitch Glasmann, who finished his career as the all-time RMAC passing leader in yards and touchdowns. He also coached 30 players to academic recognition.

His time in Silver City was his first head-coaching stop after four previous coaching stints, including two at his alma mater.

Prior to arriving at Western New Mexico in 2010, Clark spent two seasons as the defensive line coach at Colorado Mines, one season as the Defensive Coordinator at St. Ambrose, and three seasons as the defensive backs coach at Graceland University. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2001 and a master’s degree in organizational leadership in 2003. He also served as the team’s strength and conditioning coach at every coaching stop.

He has coached two players who have gone on to sign contracts in the National Football League – Marc Scheichl (Jacksonville) and Michael Coe (Dallas) – and one player who signed a contract to play in the Canadian Football League – Markis Sumpter.

Before donning a headset, Clark wore the helmet as an All-American linebacker for St. Ambrose. He spent two seasons there after transferring from Grossmont Junior College prior to the 2000 football season. He was an all-state honoree at Grossmont.

“I feel like I bring a lot of energy but, first and foremost, I’m a teacher,” said Clark. “I’m not the kind of guy to scream and rip players, but I’ll tell them what they’ve done wrong and set the bar high. I’m a big culture guy, as far as how I expect our players to do things. I believe the decisions we make as individuals leads us to the opportunity to be successful.”

Clark is a native of San Diego, California and graduated from West Hills High School in Santee. He and his wife, Mimi, have three children: sons, Caden and Kai, and daughter, Kalena.
