STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Athletics has announced that Francisco Rodriguez and Jordan Withrow are the March recipients of the ‘Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month’ award.

The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or better. Only in-season athletes are eligible for the award each month.

Rodriguez, a senior outfielder from Punta de Mata, Venezuela for the Texan Baseball team, had one of the best months by a Tarleton baseball hitter in recent years. The senior hit .439 in 16 games with 10 extra-base hits, including four home runs, and 16 RBI. He also stole seven bases and scored 13 runs while quietly putting together a 13-game hitting streak over the first 13 games of March. Rodriguez became the first Texan in program history to earn national recognition as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Hitter of the Week for his efforts against Cameron when he hit .643 and broke or tied three single-game records while leading Tarleton to three wins over Cameron in Stephenville. Conference and regional acclaim preceded his national recognition.

Withrow, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Trenton for the TexAnn Softball team, led Tarleton to a 16-3 record in the month of March and into the national spotlight at No. 20 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She was a two-time Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week during the month and has won the award three times this season. Over the past month, Withrow has appeared in 14 games, starting 12, and pitching complete games in nine en route to a 9-2 record. She boasted a 2.53 ERA in 77.1 innings of work and struck out 81. She is currently on pace to become the first TexAnn in school history to strike out 200 hitters in a single season. Her best performance came on March 20 against St. Mary’s when she took a perfect game to the final strike before settling for a one-hit shutout of the Rattlers.

Once selected as student-athlete of the month, those recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the student-athlete awards banquet in the spring.
