WICHITA FALLS – No. 17 Tarleton swept Friday’s series-opening doubleheader against Midwestern State to set the new program standard for wins in a season with 42.

“I’m really proud of the way my team came out and took care of business,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “With all the changes to the series and the outside distraction that brings, it would have been easy to lose focus on the task at hand but the girls came out and played very well. Now we need to come out with the same focus tomorrow because, this time of year, the biggest game of the season is the next one.

“Also, it’s really cool to set a new school record in wins,” he continued. “This group has worked very hard beginning way back in September and I’m excited for them to have this record.”
Game 1: No. 17 Tarleton 11, Midwestern State 2

A game that was a pitcher’s duel through six innings took a big turn in Tarleton’s favor during the seventh when the No. 17 TexAnns exploded for an eight spot to break the game wide open and cruise to an 11-2 win to tie the then-school record for wins in a season (41).

Nyka Wood and Megan Durante sparked the offense in the opening inning when Wood singled up the middle to keep the inning alive with two outs before Durante cashed in with a two-run homer down the left field line to give Tarleton a 2-0 lead.

After Midwestern cut the Tarleton lead in half with a solo shot in their half of the first, Tarleton got that run back two innings later when Georgia Capell led off the inning with her 14th home run of the season to push Tarleton out to a 3-1 advantage.

That lead would keep true until Midwestern State pulled within one in the bottom of the sixth, but Tarleton would answer back with authority in the seventh.

Wood and Durante finished what they started way back in the first when the senior duo led off the inning with back-to-back home runs. After a walk and two singles loaded the bases, Elizabeth Svienty and Destiny Crumpley plated one run each with an RBI walk and RBI hit by pitch, respectively, before Capell cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to complete the eight-run frame.

Jordan Withrow worked around a two-out walk to close out her 22nd complete game and 22nd win of the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and struck out 12 in seven innings of work.

Offensively, Capell went 2-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Her two home runs give her 15 on the season and bring her within three of tying Arianna Rodriguez (18) for the most in a single season in Tarleton history. Durante led the offense with a 3-3 day at the dish with two runs scored, three RBI, and her second career multi-home run game.

Wood and Karli Herron also had two-hit performances while Amanda Conner, Marisa Flores, and Maddie Quintanar had one hit each for Tarleton.

Another seventh-inning surge lifted Tarleton to its record-setting 42nd win of the season in Friday’s nightcap.

Every run that scored over the first six innings from either team was done one at a time, beginning with a single run in the opening frame when Megan Durante drove in Georgia Capell with an RBI single to put Tarleton on top 1-0.

That score carried into the top of the fourth when Tarleton added another run on a sacrifice fly from Capell to bring home Karli Herron, who led off the inning with a walk. After Midwestern got on the board in their half of the fourth, Tarleton got it right back when Herron drove in Durante with an RBI double for a 3-1 lead.

The teams traded single runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Wood in the top half and a solo home run in the bottom half, then Tarleton used the long ball to break it open in the seventh. With two outs, Kadyn Kirkpatrick went yard for a two-run shot and, two batters later, Capell followed up with a two-run job of her own to pull within one home run of tying the single-season record.

Megan Rosewell worked around a one-out single in the seventh to cap off her 14th win of the season and 10th complete game. The senior allowed two runs – one earned – on seven hits while striking out three.

Meghann Wrinkle, Herron, and Quintanar had two hits each while Capell, Wood, Durante, Tanna Huie, Svienty, Kirkpatrick, and Kaitlyn Thomas had one hit each to round out the 13-hit attack.

Tarleton and Midwestern State are scheduled to close out the series tomorrow with a single game at 6 p.m. Stay tuned to TarletonSports.com for weather updates throughout the day.
