STEPHENVILLE (May 16, 2018)– Newly elected Stephenville Mayor Doug Svien, formerly a Stephenville city council member of seven years, looks forward to continuing to work on projects and plan for Stephenville’s future in his new role.

“There are a lot of things to be excited about,” Svien said. “There is a lot of good that is going on, but there is a lot that needs to be done.”

Last month Svien ran unopposed for the mayor position after former Stephenville Mayor Kenny Weldon chose not to run for reelection.

“Kenny came and visited with me and said, “I’m not going to run again” and asked if I would run,” Svien said.

As the chief executive officer of Rock House, Svien makes decisions on which projects and goals to prioritize every day. Svien plans on bringing those skills into his new role.

“You can’t do everything at one time,” Svien said. “We have close to $90 million in need out there right now. How do you prioritize that? How do you do it without raising taxes?”

Svien believes the answer lies in growing the economy.

“So, that’s going to be a priority,” Svien said. “We have some infrastructure issues we need to deal with, and Kenny was really good about making sure that we look at the infrastructure needs in the long-range vision.  [We also have the] long-range capital improvement plan and long-range asset management plan. I’m sure it will take more than a year to get that done, but Kenny got it started.”

In addition to working at Rock House and serving as mayor, Svien is a member of the Graham Street Church of Christ. He is also the president of the Provider’s Alliance for Community Services of Texas, which serves about 10,000 people with disabilities and conducts $250-300 million of business per year.

“I helped form that organization eight years ago,” Svien said. “I was a founding member and was reelected president back in January. So, for the first four years of existence [Svien was president], and we had another president for four years. Now they’ve asked me to come back.”

Svien has lived in Stephenville with his wife Sherilyn Svien since January 1987.

“My first daughter was born in Abilene, and my second daughter was born there but moved here about three days later,” Svien said. “This is home.”
