Tarleton’s Johnston, Sud named ITA Scholar-Athletes

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton’s Erika Johnston and Neetika Sud were named Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The ITA recognized 735 teams and 4,328 scholar-athletes from across the nation among all levels of men’s and women’s collegiate competition. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters.

This is the second ITA Scholar-Athlete award for Erika Johnston, formerly Richarme. She earned the honor as a true freshman in the spring of 2015, during which she was also an all-conference player and the LSC Freshman of the Year.

The Montgomery native wrapped up her four-year Tarleton career last season. She recorded over with 31 career singles victories, including 14 as the team’s No. 1 competitor, and 39 career wins in doubles play. Over her career, she was a two-time Academic All-LSC and a two-time all-conference award winner.

Sud is coming off her first season of Tarleton Tennis and was an all-conference singles player after boasting a record of 13-5 as the No. 2 player in the lineup for head coach Lance Drake. Sud was 4-2 in conference play and 1-1 against nationally-ranked opponents. She ended the season with four wins in her last five matches, including a 6-3, 6-0 win over Maria Delgadillo of then-No. 36 Angelo State. She was named the ITA Region Rookie of the Year in May.

She also won 11 doubles matches for the year between two different partners. All her doubles’ wins were in the No. 2 match.
