Football fans show up in large numbers to watch Jackets’ scrimmage

In some spots, the football fans were three deep as the Yellow Jackets’ football scrimmage was well attended Saturday with everyone wanting to get a glimpse of the 2018 team.

Stephenville is coming off a 12-3 record and with a state-ranking as high as number three on one football poll there’s also a lot expected out of this year’s team.

Prior to the start of the season coach Greg Winder said he likes the fact his team getting some attention but the Jackets’ focus won’t be on the hype but instead, a brutal preseason schedule followed up by a very tough district.

Stephenville faces a revenge-minded Argyle team for the first of three road trips before they will get a chance to play at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium which is currently under a renovation project (and on schedule). Last year’s 31-28 win knocked Argyle from the unbeaten ranks and promises to make this year’s season opener supercharged.

The Jackets are returning 23 lettermen this season including two preseason all-staters in linebacker Blu Caylor (166 tackles) and runningback Krece Nowak (1,720 yards in 13 games). It’s on defense where the Jackets have been generating lots of coffee house talk with the words “nasty” and “hard-hitting” being tossed about.

Saturday the Jackets were ready to hit somebody and those first good crunches of the year got the blood to pumping. (Note the picture above as Blu Caylor mixes it up with Lane York)

One of the Jackets’ biggest questions lies at quarterback with Cole Stanley and Kade Renfro battling for the starting spot and both turned in solid performances. An intrasquad scrimmage won’t be the deciding factor who wins the job as Stephenville has a pair of scrimmages and three full weeks before traveling to Argyle.
