Although Stephenville’s Marty Yates established a new arena record for tie-down roping at the Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo his victory wasn’t assured until after Sunday’s performance.

Hereford cowboy Monty Lewis did his best with a time of 7.5, but that wasn’t enough to best Yates’ new record time of 7.2 seconds which also earned him a check of $2,447 and best yet a spot in the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. The former record of 7.3 seconds had been held by four cowboys Kurt Goulding, 2002; Fred Whitfield, 2002; Tyson Durfey, 2016; Tuf Cooper, 2017.
