Texans win Watson Ford Invitational, TexAnns place second

CLINTON, MS – Tarleton dominated from start to finish Saturday afternoon as the Texans took the top spot in the men’s 8,000-meter race and the TexAnns brought home a second-place team at the Watson Ford Invitational.

“I’m really proud of both teams and how they competed today,” said head coach Pat Ponder. “The men ran well as a pack, which is what we were working on. I’m proud of Quenten [Lassater], I thought he ran very smart. The women didn’t run their best race but they ran the best they could today.”

Quenten Lassater won his second career cross country race with a time of 25:13.02, which is an improvement of 0:27.62 from the time of his last race victory at Angelo State last season. It’s Lassater’s first win of this season.
With Lassater leading the pack, Tarleton’s Jared Elizondo came in close behind with a third-place finish and a time of 25:27.88. The Texans had four more athletes finish as a pack in fifth through eighth place. Michael Simcho (25:40.04), Justin Botello (25:41.26), Kyle Doty (25:44.04), Johen Deleon (25:50.68) all posted top 10 finishes, in the respective orders. Rounding out the Texan runners was Nicholas Mosqueda came away with an 11th place finish in a time of 26:17.31 while Fabion Trevino placed 12th (26:17.32).
Imani Williams led the way for the TexAnns placing fourth with a time of 23:18.70. Williams ran a career best by 0:52.90 from last season at the LSC Championship in 2017. Gretzel Jimenez (23:52.50) and Emily Ayers (24:11.80) finished in the top 10 with seventh and 10th place finishes. Rounding out the TexAnn runners was Meagan Riley (24:18.00) placing 13th, Gwyneth Garcia (24:37.80) finishing 16th, Taylor Richards (24:39.90) came in 17th, Lisa Flores (25:52.10) placed 26th and Alexis Terry placed 29th with a time of 26:14.30.
The Texans and TexAnns will travel to Texas A&M-Commerce on October 12 for the East Texas Shootout.
