Five score in double figures as Texans win shootout with William Jewell

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Led by a flawless offensive afternoon by Josh Hawley, Tarleton outlasted William Jewell in an offensive showcase in the Texans’ final game of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Sunday afternoon. The Texans won 92-81.

Hawley, who led all scorers with 22 points on 8-8 shooting from the floor, 2-2 shooting from beyond the arc, and 4-4 at the free throw line, got the afternoon started with a three-pointer to get the Texans on the board in the opening minute. The game stayed tight with the Cardinals holding a slim lead over the first seven minutes until Ritchie Mitchell started a go-ahead run with 13:03 left in the opening half.

Mitchell tied the game at 15-15 with a layup that was the beginning of a 7-0 surge to put the Texans up 20-15 over the next minute. Over the next five minutes, Tarleton extended its lead out to double figures with Hawley capping off an 11-6 run with a layup to make it 31-21. William Jewell pulled within eight several times but could draw no closer as the first half expired and Tarleton went into the break with a 46-38 lead.

Out of the break, William Jewell cut into the Tarleton lead and pulled within 53-50 but Preston Enloe put a stop to the Cardinal run with back-to-back three-balls to put Tarleton up 59-50 with 13:51 left to play.

Tarleton pushed its lead out to as many as 21 with 5:23 left to play before going on to the 11-point victory and the second of the season.

Behind Hawley’s second straight double-double was Ritchie Mitchell with 14 points while Enloe (12), Jaraan Lands (11), and Randall Broddie (10) also scored in double figures. Corinthian Ramsey added nine while Clashon Gaffney (6), Jesse Hill (6), and Sam Marshall (2) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.

As a team, Tarleton shot .544 from the floor and .333 from downtown for the game while holding William Jewell to .394 from the floor and .283 from beyond the arc. Tarleton was also 23-26 at the free throw line. The Texans also dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Cardinals 44-27, including doubling them up 34-17 on the defensive glass.
