TexAnns top Hilltoppers 93-90 in overtime, Bostad pops 27 points

AUSTIN – McKinley Bostad scored a career-high 27 points while Katie Webster and Mackenzie Hailey each posted 18 points to help Tarleton to a 93-90 overtime road win over St. Edward’s.

The win improves the TexAnns to 7-2 while giving the Hilltoppers (8-2) their first home loss of the season.

Tarleton got off to a fast start, leading 17-4 over St. Edward’s as Bostad scored eight points including a pair of 3-pointers during the stretch. In addition to her career high in points, Bostad also posted a game-high four assist and added six rebounds. The TexAnns led 17-11 after the opening quarter while shooting 44 percent from the floor and draining 4-of-8 on 3-pointers.

Kaylee Allen’s jumper gave Tarleton a 24-11 lead – its largest of the game – with 6:22 left in the first half. Allen finished with six points and three steals, all in the first half. St. Edward’s went on a 7-0 run to get to within five before Webster scored five straight points for the TexAnns to go up 31-23. Webster pulled down seven rebounds and also shot 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Destiney Winkfield drained a jumper right before the buzzer to give Tarleton a 34-25 lead at the half.

St. Edward’s offense came out of the break on fire, outscoring the TexAnns 29-20 in the third quarter. The Hilltoppers tied the game at 44-44 with 3:45 left in the quarter before the TexAnns regained the lead on Hailey’s layup. The South Central region opponents would enter the fourth quarter tied at 54-54.

The Hilltoppers took a 60-56 lead early in the fourth quarter but Bostad followed with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one. St. Edward’s had its biggest lead of the game at 67-61 with 6:27 to go when Winkfield drilled a three and Hailey sank a pair of free throws for a 5-0 run. Hailey scored all 18 of her points in the second half and also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Trailing 77-74 with a minute to go, Hailey’s layup cut the deficit to one and Bostad sank a free throw to tie the game with 22 seconds left that would send it to overtime.

Bostad and Hailey combined to score 11 of the 16 points in overtime for Tarleton. Hailey’s layup gave Tarleton the lead for good at 85-84 while Bostad connected on a pair of free throws with three seconds left to close out the game.

Nina Alvarez, who sank a pair of clutch free throws in overtime, led the TexAnns with eight points and four assists off the bench. Winkfield (6 points), Kandyn Faurie (5), Lucy Benson (4) and Hannah Hyde (1) rounded out the scoring efforts for the TexAnns.

Tarleton will return home to face another Heartland Conference opponent in Arkansas-Fort Smith on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
