TexAnns top Arkansas-Fort Smith for third straight win

STEPHENVILLE – With four starters scoring in double figures, Tarleton women’s basketball picked up a midweek in-region 81-69 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Wednesday In Wisdom Gym.

Tarleton (8-2) shot 49 percent from the floor and forced the Lions into 19 turnovers, which led to 20 points off turnovers and 34 fast break points. Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns with 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Kaylee Allen had 18 points and four rebounds.

The TexAnns used an early 7-0 run in the first quarter on five points from Kylie Collins to build a 9-3 lead and the TexAnns never trailed again. Collins finished with 12 points, two assists and two steals. UAFS did tie the game at 15-15 with 48 seconds left in the first quarter, by Kandyn Faurie drilled a corner 3-pointer for her only points of the game to put the TexAnns up 18-15 after one quarter.

The second quarter was the turning point in the game, as Tarleton outscored UAFS 17-9. The TexAnns went on a 11-0 run to build its first double-digit lead at 33-21. Hailey posted four points during the stretch and Katie Webster, who had nine points and six rebounds overall, added an and-one layup to keep the momentum rolling. Tarleton led 35-24 at the break.

The second quarter push proved to be big for Tarleton as they only outscored UAFS 46-45 in the second half. McKinley Bostad scored all 14 of her points in the second half, including nine in the fourth quarter and went 7-8 at the free-throw line.

Nina Alvarez, Lucy Benson and Hannah Hyde each had two points off the bench while Hyde also pulled down a career-high five rebounds.

Tarleton will take on East Texas Baptist in an exhibition contest on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
