The #8 Stephenville Honeybees took about 35 seconds to get rolling Tuesday night against the Mineral Wells Lady Rams and they romped to a 73-30 District 7-4A win in a solid team effort.
It’s the second time this season Stephenville (21-6, 5-0) has beaten Mineral Wells by more than 40 points and after that first game and a week off coach Alan Thorpe admitted he was a little worried how the Bees would hit the court.

“We really harped on that. We didn’t need a letdown,” Thorpe said. “I didn’t want them looking at that last game and getting lackadaisical.”
Stephenville was the polar opposite of that and came out on fire with a 19-point first quarter led by Jaci Morton’s six points and four from Alee McClendon.

The Honeybee’s defensive press had a few new wrinkles in it with players subbing in and out in different patterns than Stephenville has used in the past.
“The press has a few new looks, but it’s press we always run with a few little adjustments. We are just trying out a few different things,” Thorpe said.
Which of course means the Bees are also continuing to improve on the court while trying to get all the way healthy before the playoffs.
The switch up led to a drop in the scoring in the third quarter, and Mineral Wells won that stanza 12-10, of course, there’s not a whole lot of worry when you are leading 40-16 at the half.

That was thanks to 21 second-quarter points including three-pointers from Hanna Bernays (2) and Mikayla Diaz and Autumn Nichols. The Bees enjoyed one of their better nights from long-distance range netting six overall.
By the time the final minute came around the Lady Rams had signaled they had enough as they did not pursue freshman Landy Withers as she dribbled out the remaining time standing in place.

Bernays and McClendon led the Bees’ scoring with 12 points each while Morton and Kaylee added nine points each.
Additional scorers were Hanna Powell 4, Kassidy Nowak 5, Withers 8, Diaz 7, Nichols 3, Funderburgh 4.
The Bees will be at home Friday night for a 6 p.m. contest against Glen Rose the game is a Coaches for the Cure contest with all proceeds going to benefit Michelle Richardson who is battling an aggressive form of breast cancer.
