Mitchell scores career high as Texans fall 65-58

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton snapped a three-game win streak with a 65-58 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans fall to 18-7 overall and 8-6 in the Lone Star Conference while A&M-Commerce improves to 19-5 overall and 11-3 in conference.

Josh Hawley and Richie Mitchell combined for over half the scoring for the Texans, with each player scoring 17 points. It was a career-high scoring effort for Mitchell, while Hawley tied a season high with 14 rebounds for his LSC-leading 13th double-double on the year. Hawley also had three steals and two blocks.

The Texans shot 47 percent in the game and held the Lions to just 39 percent from the floor, but the game was decided by turnovers, which the Texans had 18 – including 10 in the second half – compared to just nine for the visiting Lions. The 18 turnovers translated to 22 points for the Lions.

After trailing 10-2 to start the game, the Texans used a 12-2 run to take their first lead at 14-12. Hawley and Randall Broddie each had five points during the stretch. Broddie finished the game with eight points.

Tarleton’s biggest lead of the game came with 6:43 in the first half as the Texans were up 25-19 after Sam Marshall scored four of his six points on two straight possessions. The Lions closed the half on a 14-4 run to lead 33-29 at the break.

The two teams were tied at 49-49 with 10 minutes remaining before Willie Rooks caught fire for the Lions, scoring 16 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. The Lions made four straight 3-pointers to pull away.

Jesse Hill had five points and two blocks for the Texans, while Corinthian Ramsey and Clashon Gaffney each scored two and Brandon Goldsmith had one point.

Tarleton will host No. 5 West Texas A&M on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
