LAWTON, Okla. – Georgia Capell came up big with some late-inning heroics in the field and at the plate in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader with Cameron to lead No. 14 Tarleton to the series win at McMahon Field. Tarleton lost the second game in six innings.
“I’m proud of them for coming in and taking a series on the road against a really good Cameron team,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “We have to learn from our mistakes in game three and get ready for a really good Kingsville team next weekend.”
Game 1: No. 14 Tarleton 6, Cameron 2
Georgia Capell’s arm and bat came to the rescue in the late innings in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader as she delivered a series win with a 6-2 victory over Cameron at McMahon Field.
Freshman Tristan Bridges got the starting nod in the circle and was dealing over the first five innings. The left-hander from Denton allowed only one hit over that span, which was an RBI single in the third that allowed a leadoff walk to score. Otherwise, Bridges kept the Aggie offense off the board through the first five.
Tarleton’s offense managed only two runs over the first six innings, which came on the might blast of Morgan Sebastian’s bat. The freshman from Krum, who was a three-year high school teammate of Bridges in high school and reunited with the TexAnns, came to the aid of the Tarleton starter with a two-run home run in the fifth to give Tarleton a 2-1 edge.
Cameron rallied in the bottom of the sixth with three straight batters doing damage. The Aggies drew a walk with one out and then had an infield single before an RBI double tied the game at 2-2.
However, it was Capell’s arm that stopped things at a mere tie game.
The sophomore outfielder fired a strike to Sebastian at home plate to get the go-ahead run at the plate. Bridges danced around a stolen base and got a ground ball to Morgan Ling at second to dance out of danger.
Karli Herron got the Tarleton rally started in the seventh with a leadoff single. Sebastian reached on an error and Elizabeth Svienty singled to load up the bases before Capell’s bat gave Tarleton a 6-2 lead with one might swing of the bat. The sophomore All-American crushed her second grand slam of the season to left field to extend Tarleton’s lead out to 6-2. Tarleton loaded the bases again but couldn’t push across any more.
Bridges worked around a two-out walk in the seventh to retire the side and secure her third win of the season. The freshman allowed two runs on three hits and five walks while striking out five.
Capell joined Destiny Crumpley as the TexAnns with two hits in the game. Svienty, Tanna Huie, Herron and Sebastian each had one hit to round out Tarleton’s eight-hit effort.
Game 2: Cameron 8, No. 14 Tarleton 0 (6)
Tarleton’s bats fell silent in the series finale and the TexAnns were forced to settle for a series win instead of a series sweep Sunday afternoon.
Cameron scored two in the first and exploded for five runs on three hits and two Tarleton errors in the fourth before scoring the final necessary run of the day on an RBI single with one out in the sixth.
Tanna Huie provided the lone Tarleton hit of the game on a two-out single in the first inning. The TexAnns were held hitless after that.
Tarleton will return to action next weekend for their home debut against Texas A&M-Kingsville in a showdown of two of the Lone Star Conference’s top teams. The TexAnns were originally scheduled to play Tuesday, but moved that doubleheader with Texas A&M International to April 16 due to inclement weather.
