Tarleton Athletics has announced that Jesse Hill of Texan Basketball and Kaylee Allen of Tarleton Women’s Basketball are the January recipients of the ‘Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month’ award.
The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.
To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or better. Only in-season athletes are eligible for the award each month.
In eight January games, Hill averaged 11.0 points on 62-percent shooting and 7.1 rebounds for the Texans. Hill also had 14 blocks and 14 assists while guiding the Texans to a 5-3 record. Hill recorded his first career double-double at Eastern New Mexico, posting 20 points and 11 rebounds – both career highs. He had three double-digit scoring games in January and recorded seven or more rebounds in six out of eight games. He also tied a career high with four blocks in a win over UT Permian Basin and followed that game with 19 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and a career high three steals in a win over Western New Mexico.
Allen led Tarleton to five victories in eight games during the month of January, thus far, and averaged 13.3 points per game on 36-percent shooting from the floor and three-point land. The senior from Cincinnati totaled 28 rebounds to go along with 17 assists, 13 steals and six blocks over those eight games. Her biggest performance of the month came in a 24-point scoring effort on the road at West Texas A&M to help the TexAnns knock off the then-No. 8 Lady Buffs in Canyon.
Once selected as student-athlete of the month, the recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the beginning of the following fall semester.
