Six Honeybees scored goals as #1 Stephenville rolled past China Spring 8-0 and tied the school record set in 2011 for the most number of goals in a season at 108 at Lem Brock Field Friday night.
Stephenville still has three games remaining before the Class 4-A playoffs, so the 2019 squad has the opportunity to push the new record into legendary status. That scoring pace of more than five-goal per game has also kept the Bees undefeated at 19-0-2 on the season.
The Bees pushed through a familiar pattern scoring a quick goal and then began testing for weakness.
“At the beginning of games you are going to get a team’s best,” coach Casey Weil said” I don’t want to sound bad, but play till we can kind of wear them down. Then we kind of start taking over games.”
Stephenville got its insurance goal from Emily Kirbo in the first three minutes of play and then began looking for opportunities that suddenly came like a landslide with five goals in seven minutes.
Ciera Johnston notched the first of two goals when she back spun a worm-burner into the net with 25:33 on the first half clock. Exactly two minutes later Gracie Bales popped in an unassisted shot for a 3-0, and then Bales made it 4-0 just 50 seconds later.
Following a tripping foul, Beatris Chavarria boomed home a thundering 25-yard shot that would have been good from another 10 yards away, and Stephenville was up on top 5-0. Johnston then added goal number six for the Bees and Stephenville still had 18:42 to play in the half.
“It just takes a little bit to get into the flow of the game and see how the other team is playing,” Weil said. “In the second half, we made some substitutions and let some of the girls who had been setting for 20 minutes get in and get some action.”
While Stephenville didn’t score at the rapid rate it did in the first half the Bees did continue to work their magic on offense despite Weil pulling out his big guns.
Haleigh Beam nailed a shot to put the Bees up 7-0, and barely two minutes later Cody Hawks tied the SHS season record for goals by a team with 108.
“I’m very proud of the entire team and the way we played the whole game,” Weil said. “I think we moved the ball well and we didn’t put ourselves in any real problems.”
The Bees continue to show improvement with their 19th win of the season as China Spring scored two goals in a 7-2 loss to Stephenville earlier in the season.
Bees fans have two more chances to catch soccer games at home, but there may be some changes to the schedule due to bad weather expected on Tuesday when Stephenville is supposed to host Brownwood in 5 p.m. games. Friday, March 8 Stephenville plays its final home game at 5 p.m. against Mineral Wells.
