PORTALES, N.M. – Tarleton capitalized on a pair of game-changing Eastern New Mexico errors while Ty Jones and Chris Reed combined for a victory on the bump to deliver a 2-1 victory in the series opener.

With the win, Tarleton improves their hold on the sixth-place spot in the Lone Star Conference standings to two games with seven games left in the season.

After a weather delay held off first pitch for over an hour, the teams traded goose eggs over the first six innings. It wasn’t until the top of the seventh when Tarleton got the offense rolling with back-to-back singles by Blake Burns and Jon Law. Zach Mesa reached on a throwing error that allowed the first Tarleton run to cross for a 1-0 lead.

Tarleton took the one-run lead into the ninth when Colby Seltzer led off the inning with a walk and Tyler Fowler singled down the left field line. Another error allowed Seltzer to score and extend the lead to 2-0, which would ultimately loom large.

Eastern New Mexico led off the ninth with a double and eventually plated one run with back-to-back groundouts but Chris Reed got a third grounder to complete the inning and close out the game.

Ty Jones pitched the first seven innings and was spectacular en route to his first career Tarleton victory. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out a season-high eight. He turned to Chris Reed out of the bullpen, who locked down his first career save with two innings of relief.

Tarleton received one base hit each from seven different Texans – Hunter Thomas, Fowler, Tyler Parker, Burns, Jon Law, Zach Mesa, and Jordan Parker – to round out the offense.

The series will resume tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT with a doubleheader at Greyhound Field.
