STEPHENVILLE (May 1, 2019) — Tarleton State University student CallieAnn Petree has been selected to participate in the Washington D.C. Congressional Internship program. She received a scholarship this week for the semester-long study-away opportunity.

Petree, a native of Decatur, Texas, who’s majoring in social work, is also the first student from Tarleton’s College of Health Sciences and Human Services to be selected for the internship. She will spend the fall 2019 semester interning for U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, congressman for the 11th District of Texas.

Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio and Provost Karen Murray presented Petree with the $21,000 Washington D.C. Congressional Internship Scholarship, supported by funds from the President’s Circle, Academic Circle and Office of the Dean for the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.

“This is a significant scholarship, and we are very proud of you for being selected to represent the university in Washington D.C. You will be our ambassador in the congressman’s office, and we consider this a very high honor,” Dottavio told Petree during the scholarship presentation. “I hope you take the core values of this university firmly planted in your heart and mind. I am confident that you will represent Tarleton well.”

During the congressional internship, Petree will work alongside the congressman’s staff, answering constituents’ phone calls and visiting with guests to Conaway’s offices, sorting mail, writing letters, attending hearings and gathering notes, and giving tours of the capitol.

To receive the scholarship, students from Tarleton apply for the congressional internship program and undergo a committee review process. Committee members are Drs. Jeff Breeden, Malcolm Cross, Karley Goen, Aaron George, John LeCounte, and Nathaniel Cogley, chair.

To participate in the Congressional Internship Program, students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, have completed 60 semester credit hours of coursework and have completed core government and history courses.
