STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Athletics has announced that Brant Bailey of Texan Football and Lauren Kersey of Texan Volleyball are the September recipients of the ‘Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month’ award, presented by The Grove.

The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or better. Only in-season athletes are eligible for the award each month.

Bailey has enjoyed a hot start to his senior season on the field. Bailey has started all three games at tight end and has already caught four passes for 32 yards and a touchdown while helping block for the Texan offense that is second in the nation in total offense (567.3 ypg) and fourth in the nation in rushing offense (292.3 ypg). In addition to his success on the field, Bailey was recently named a national semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy presented by the National Football Foundation, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

Kersey was named the recipient on the women’s side after leading the No. 10 Texans to a 7-3 start to the season, including national top-25 wins over No. 14 Rockhurst, No. 12 Central Missouri, and No. 19 Cal State-LA. Kersey leads the team with 112 kills on the season on a .333 hitting percentage. She is also coming off a week in which she led the team with 10 blocks over seven sets to start the Texans off to a 2-0 start in Lone Star Conference play. She was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week after two wins in the Colorado Premier Challenge earlier this month.

Once selected as student-athlete of the month, the recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the beginning of the following fall semester.
