Tarleton rodeo teams advance in regional standings

STEPHENVILLE — Both Tarleton State University rodeo teams finished second last weekend at the Vernon College Rodeo and, by doing so, improved their standings in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southwest Region.

The men jumped to third in the region, led by four rough stock participants who finished in the top four, including a bareback championship for Payton Lackey. Taylor Schmidt led the women’s charge up the leader board; her two-head 5.4 was good for first in breakaway roping.

Caroline Kelly ran the barrel pattern twice in 34.93 seconds for second overall, and teammate Timber Allenbrand finished fourth in 35.08.

Celie Vick took third in goat tying, downing two head in 13.4 seconds. Teammates Maddy Dickens and Rayme Jones finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

On the men’s team, Lackey posted a first-place 153 total on two rides to finish just nine points in front of teammate Brodee Lammers, who took second in the event.

Jake Barnes ended up second with 149.5 points on two head of saddle bronc horses, and Brody Cress was fourth overall. Lucas Macza also qualified for the championship round in the event.

Tarleton’s timed event specialists captured two titles in Vernon.

Wyatt Williams flashed a 7.5-second time to win the tie-down roping average, then turned in an 8.6 in the finals for the championship. Tarleton’s Jace Allen was seventh in the event overall, and Jhett Jackson took ninth.

Brett Stuart captured another event crown, posting identical 3.9 clockings to win the steer wrestling average. He also teamed with partner Reed Boos of Cisco College for eighth in team roping.  Haven Meged of Tarleton and roping partner Brady Kyle of Ranger College placed ninth.

Both teams head to Canadian, Texas, this weekend to compete in the season’s fourth NIRA stop, hosted by Frank Phillips College.
