Texan Golf erases 11-stroke deficit to win Oklahoma Intercollegiate

LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton Golf sat in fifth place and was 11 strokes off the lead after the first round of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate on Monday.

With an 18-stroke improvement on the final day, the Texans came storming back to win their first tournament of the season with a score of 602 (+34) – topping Midwestern State by a single stroke at the Lawton Country Club. The Texans had rounds of 310 and 292 to claim the title. It’s the second career tournament win for head coach Isabel Jimenez.

Three Texans finished in the top 7 on the individual leaderboard, including Sofia Rodriguez, who shot a career-best 145 (+3) to win her first tournament title. Rodriguez moved up nine spots after firing a collegiate personal best 69 (-2) in the final round – a seven-stroke difference than her first round. The freshman from Spain has finished in the top 20 in all four tournaments this season and Tuesday’s win was the first top 10 placement. Rodriguez posted a team-leading 25 pars and four birdies. She also led the field in par 4 scoring, shooting a 3.94 (-1) and was the only player to shoot under par on Par 4s.

Junie Khaw climbed 10 spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for third with a score of 148 (+6). Khaw had rounds of 77 and even par 71 for her third top 10 finish and fourth top 20 of the fall season. Khaw carded 23 pars and matched Rodriguez for the team-lead with four birdies.

Casey Leatherman made the biggest jump of the day for the Texans, moving up 11 spots to tie for seventh place with a score of 150 (+8). Leatherman posted rounds of 78 and 72 for her third top 20 finish and first top 10 of the season. The senior from Huntsville tied for the team lead with 25 pars in the two rounds and led the team in par 5 scoring, shooting even par.

Sophie Caldon rounded out the Tarleton scorecard by shooting a 159 (+17) and had rounds of 79 and 80 to place 25th. Breanna Smith shot a 166 (+24) and tied for 39th for her top finish of the season.

The Oklahoma Intercollegiate was the final tournament of the fall season for the Texans. The spring season will begin on Feb. 24 when the Texans compete at the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin.
