Texans jump up to No. 3 in AFCA poll, set highest ranking in program history

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Football has set a new record for highest ranking in program history. The Texans moved up one spot to No. 3 in the nation in this week’s rankings from the American Football Coaches Association.

The Texans received 689 points and one vote for first place. Valdosta State, the defending national champions, are No. 1 with 773 points and 29 first-place nods. Ferris State (2) is at 741 points and a first. The Texans jumped Minnesota State, who falls to fourth with 683 points. The top 10 teams in the AFCA poll are all undefeated.

The Texans, who improved to 9-0 on the year, have been ranked 19 straight weeks in the AFCA poll, including 16 consecutive weeks in the top 10 and 10 straight in the top 5 – the longest stretches in program history.

Tarleton is one of three Lone Star Conference teams ranked in the AFCA poll. Angelo State remains at No. 21 and Texas A&M-Commerce stayed at No. 24.

Last Saturday’s 66-7 victory over Midwestern State marked the 19th straight regular season win for the Texans and 15th consecutive LSC win. The Texans have also won 13 straight home games, tied for the longest streak in NCAA Division II.

The Texans, who clinched a share of the LSC Championship for the second straight season, will travel to Liberty, Missouri for a non-conference matchup against William Jewell on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
