STEPHENVILLE – Vengeance, sweet vengeance.
Tarleton avenged its first meeting with Texas A&M-Kingsville by throttling the Javelinas in straight sets at Wisdom Gym Saturday afternoon. With the win, Tarleton moved into second place in their LSC division – two games behind St. Edward’s, who has two divisional games left this season.
The Texans held Kingsville to a paltry .009 hitting percentage for the match. The Javelinas landed only 28 kills and had 27 errors on 110 attempts against the Tarleton defense in the match.
After the opening set started in an 8-8 tie, back-to-back Javelina miscues opened the door for five unanswered points that ultimately started a 17-5 Texan surge to give Tarleton a 25-13 win in the opening set.
Kingsville jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead in the second set to force a Tarleton timeout, but out of the break, the Texans got a kill from Sofia Tonga to spark a 13-3 Texan run. Over that span, Kingsville failed to scored consecutive points while the Texans built a 17-10 lead. Tarleton scored eight of the final 17 points to close out the second-set win on a Carmen Kinsey kill.
The final set was a seesaw battle as neither team was able to pull away. In a 22-22 tie, Tarleton got a kill from Kinsey and a block from Lauren Kersey on consecutive plays to set up match point at 24-22. After the Javelinas scored one to pull within one at 24-23, Kinsey put the match away with a kill shot.
Tatyana Tuialii-Umi led the team once again with 15 kills while Kinsey finished with eight. Kayla Brannon dished out a team-high 33 assists while Adriana Darthuy led the team with 18 digs.
Tarleton will be home for the final time this regular season on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. against Texas Woman’s. There will be a senior night recognition prior to the match.
