Texan women’s basketball defeated in overtime by TWU

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Women’s Basketball suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Texas Woman’s 63-55 in overtime in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans had a season-high 27 turnovers and only shot 35 percent from the floor, including 45 percent (9-20) from the free throw line. Alex Hoy led the Texans with a career-high 17 points. Marissa Escamilla came off the bench to record her first career double-double with 14 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds.

Texas Woman’s opened the game with a 15-10 lead after the first quarter before the Texans stepped it up defensively. Tarleton outscored TWU 17-6 in the second quarter behind a 6-0 run and a 10-0 run in the final two minutes to close out the half. Marissa Escamilla and Kylie Collins each had three points during the stretch while Hoy scored the final four points of the half as the Texans led 27-21 at the break.

The Texans built a 10-point lead, their largest of the game, in the third quarter on a pair of free throws from Mackenzie Hailey, who had 12 points, five rebounds and five steals in the game. TWU scored the next nine points to cut the deficit to one and the Texans led by two going to the fourth quarter.

After TWU took the lead at the start of the fourth, the Texans scored the next seven points to go up by six. The two teams would trade buckets and never lead by more than three the rest of regulation. Both teams were held scoreless in the final minute to force overtime.

In the overtime period, TWU held Tarleton scoreless for the first four minutes of play and forced the Texans into a pair of offensive fouls as the Pioneers outscored the Texans by eight in the final minute to secure the road win.

The Texans had three players in double figures (Hoy, Escamilla, Hailey) while Kylie Collins added six points, four rebounds, four assists and Kaitlyn Guillory posted five points and Lucy Benson added one.

Tarleton will travel to Pittsburg, Kansas on Wednesday, Nov. 27 to take on Pittsburg State for its next game.
